A Current Overview of the National Levee Safety Program:  Helping to Manage Flood Risks for the Nation

Wednesday, November 13, 2024

Location: Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments

(777 North Capital Street NE, Washington, DC 20002)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agenda

5:30 – 7:00 pm Welcoming, Networking and Refreshments

7:00 – 8:00 pm Presentation by Tammy Conforti, PE,

Special Assistant for Levee Safety, US Army Corps of Engineers  (USACE)

Please join us on Wednesday, November 13 to hear details about the National Levee Safety Program and how USACE and FEMA are working together to protect our communities. Many communities across the nation are protected by levees, which are often decades old and built without the benefit of modern engineering practices.  Development often intensifies behind levees putting more reliance on the levee’s ability to protect these communities.  This necessitates the need to consider evacuation and land-use planning to help manage flood risk.  Furthermore, much of the public is unaware of their flood risk or the actions they can take to reduce those risks.  As the Nation looks to make the next generation of investments in flood risk management, this is the perfect opportunity to come together and coordinate efforts to combine levees with other ways of increasing community resilience, reducing disaster relief costs, recapturing some of the natural floodplain functions, and addressing inequities in technical capabilities, funding and oversight.

Professional Development Hour (PDH) certificates provided for attendance.

Registration is required by 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at this link: Register AWRA-NCRS
