The 11th National Capital Region Water Resources Symposium, titled “Equitable and Resilient Water Resource Management and Practices,” was held at the University of the District of Columbia Student Center on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

With concerns increasing from development patterns, climate change, and rising sea-levels, flooding is becoming a significant factor impacting virtually all parts of the U.S. and around the world. Finding ways to anticipate, ameliorate, and adapt to stronger and more frequent extreme storms, locate residences and businesses to reduce current and future damages, reduce risks to humans and the health and well-being of the environment, and to address and redress long-standing inequities experienced by many economically-disadvantaged and communities of color -- at all levels -- will be key themes of this year’s discussion.

This one-day symposium brought together experts from governmental agencies, academia, the private sector, and nonprofits to discuss challenges and opportunities for equitable and resilient management and practices of water resources and infrastructure in the region, nationally, and internationally. A number of our speakers and panelists have been among the nation’s and region’s leaders helping define and address these problems.

The AWRA NCRS seeks to serve as a convenor in the water resources community to educate and inform professionals, academics and

students, and the general public about major issues in water resources policies and management.
